Important Announcements

• Dads, come enjoy breakfast with your child(ren) and have a great start to your hump day! Donuts with Dads is Wednesday, April 2nd at 8:00 am.  
• Debra Frasier, author & illustrator, will visit Crestwood on Wednesday, April 2nd.  She will share some of her books and give a cut paper illustration tutorial from 6:45 pm in the library. 
• 4th & 5th graders will learn more about growth & development on Friday, April 4th.  
• Crestwood Fun Fair will take place on April 11th!  Here are some ways you can help:

• Send a sports related item in with your child for 4th grade's raffle basket (any items related to sports or a healthy lifestyle).

Social Studies

     In Social Studies this week, students continued studying Missouri during and after the Civil War.  During the War, Missouri was a border state.  Some MO citizens wanted to abolish slavery, while others wanted to keep the practice.  After Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, many residents helped African Americans to find word, housing, and education.  After the War ended, railroads help to quickly transport people (which made the population boom) and goods (which encouraged more and more people to find work in factories).  

Math

     This week in Math, students continued to study geometry and three dimensional figures.  We practiced classifying different polygons including parallelograms, types of triangles, and more.  We practiced identifying faces, edges, and vertices.  Toward the end of the week, we illustrated fractions and mixed numbers on a number line.

Book Binge
     On Monday, we'll have a Book Binge to celebrate earning 30 compliments from other Crestwood adults!  Students should bring up to ten books they'd like to donate, and we'll take turns choosing new books for each of us to take home.

Writer's Workshop
     We've been writing Informational Text in Writer's Workshop.  First, we spent time researching our topic using several sources.  We took notes and organized our information into several chapters. Then, we created Google Presentations and are currently drafting our chapter books using this program.

Reader's Workshop
     We spent some time close reading Where the Wild Geese Go.  Close reading involves reading a text multiple times for very specific purposes.  Students read the passage to harvest new words, to grasp the author's purpose, and to understand the text structure.  They practiced writing about their reading while paraphrasing and citing textual evidence.

Math
     In Math this week, we finished up our practice with factors and multiples.  We classified numbers as prime or composite and also worked with square roots and square numbers.  On Wednesday, we started exploring geometry and reviewed segments, lines, and angles.
