Our character word this week was honesty.  Students shared reasons it's sometimes hard to be truthful:  our brains get greedy about things, like when a parent tells us we can grab 2 cookies, but we want so many more!  Even more common, telling the truth can be challenging when we are afraid of getting in trouble over a mistake we've made.  Finally, we shared ways to build trust with friends, parents, and teachers.  Students agreed that building small "blocks" of trust pays off when someone really needs to count on us.  We can build trust by:

  • 'fessing up to the small things
  • letting someone know when an item gets broken (whether it's an accident or intentional)
  • avoiding talking badly about others
  • asking for help when we need it
  • keeping our word
  •  never falsely accusing someone

This week, our character word was self-reliance.  Students shared many situations or challenges they face where they can count on themselves 100% and solve the problem independently:  studying for a test, a messy bedroom, a missing homework page, personal hygiene, and a minor disagreement with a classmate.  They also shared the tipping point in common challenges where help from a friend of adult may be necessary.  Students are excited to become more self-reliant as they grow into almost 5th grade students.

March 3, 2017

Our focus word for the week was persevere, which means to stick with something even when it feels challenging.  We shared reasons that persevering is difficult:  the math skill seems too hard, everyone else is already really good and soccer, I'm not strong enough, etc.  Then we brainstormed positive messages we could say to ourselves to encourage perseverance.  We came up with a pretty good list:
 - Never give up.
 - I will try my hardest.
 - I can watch others working hard and be reminded of what to do.
 - I can try 1 more.
 - If I give up now, all my hard work will be gone.
